What Are Pre-Built Coils?

Using quality coils contributes to a longer lifespan for pods and creates purer flavour. The way vape coils work is incredibly simple. A coil is a length of coiled nichrome wire wrapped around a wick that absorbs e-liquid from the vape tank. The coil converts power from the battery into heat, turning the e-liquid in the wick into vapour.

Premade coils are available in a variety of builds, materials, and resistances suitable for different vaping styles. Using various types of wires and wicks can change vapour production, enhance flavours and prolong your coils’ lifespan.

What Premade Coils Should I Choose?

Choose high-resistance, plus-ohm MTL prebuilt coils if you prefer a tighter draw and throat hit similar to experiencing a traditional cigarette. If you prefer more open draws and dense clouds of vapour, choose a prebuilt sub-ohm DTL coil.

What Are the Different Types of Coils?

If you’re not knowledgeable about pre-built coils, shopping for good coils can be overwhelming. Read on for a brief explanation of what each coil is and its impact on your vaping experience.

• Alien coils: Alien coils are named after their unique “X” shape, which resembles an alien’s head. A thin wire is wrapped with a thicker wire, resulting in a larger surface area. The larger surface area allows e-liquid to heat up faster, creating more vapour.
• Braided coils: Suited to advanced vapers, braided coils are often found in RDA and RTA vapes.
• Ceramic coils: Ceramic coils use ceramic to encase the metal coil. It reduces dry hits, absorbs e-liquid better and extends your coil’s lifespan.
• Juggernaut coils: Made from two parallel small-gauge wires wrapped around a larger-gauge wire core. They’re used by sub-ohm vapers.
• Mesh coils: Mesh coils are typically used in sub-ohm vaping. They’re a mesh screen that offers a larger surface area.
• Staple coils: Staple coils are rectangular and look like a staple. They’re made out of ribbon cores stacked together, then Claptoned with a fine outer gauge wire.
• Tiger coils: A tiger coil is a twisted coil that has a single round strand and a single flat ribbon strand. It has more grooves and pockets than a standard wire because of the two differently shaped wires. This creates warmer and more dense vapour.
• Transformer coils: These coils are tricore-fused Clapton or regular-fused Clapton coils that have been claptoned with regular wire. It’s a very hot coil build and not suitable for low-powered devices.
• Twisted coils: Twisted coils are made from twisting two flat wires together to form a spiral. The grooves created allow for better e-liquid flow, enhancing flavour.
• Fused Clapton coils: This is a complex coil structure used in electronic vapes. A thin-gauge wire is wrapped around at least two thicker parallel wires. They’re available in various resistances, making them a fit for both MTL and DTL vaping.

Almost all of these pre-built coils are variations of Clapton coils. Clapton coils are composed of a thin wire wrapped around one or more thicker core wires. They’re made with different kinds of vape wires and gauges. Mostly, Kanthal, stainless steel, nickel or nichrome.

Prebuilt Coil Material and Resistance

Coil material can affect their resistance and heating capacity. Nickel coils have higher resistance and offer a smoother pull. Kanthal is compatible with various wattages and is durable, making it popular for both beginners and advanced vapers.

Since stainless steel can be used to control wattage and temperature, it provides cleaner flavours. Ceramic coils are known for their longevity and ability to prevent burnt hits.
