What is a vape coil?

A vape coil (also known as an atomizer head) is a spirally-wrapped piece of wire that is situated inside your vape tank, submerged in e-liquid. Coils are wrapped in an absorbent material (usually cotton) that wicks, or soaks up the e-liquid in the atomiser. When you fire, or power up your vape, the coil heats up and turns the absorbed e-liquid into vapour, which you inhale.

What is coil resistance?

As coils do the duty of converting energy into heat, this process can be quantified by their electrical resistance value, which is measured in ohms. Different coils are more suited to different kits and tanks due to this value. Resistances can vary widely, as you can see by the variety of coils that we offer, but generally, these fall into one of two categories:

High-resistance coils

Any coil with a resistance of above 1.0 ohms is considered high-resistance. These coils are more suited to beginner vapers, as they require less powerful kits – they are run at a much lower power. Most kits will fall into this category. Vapour clouds produced by high-resistance coils are usually smaller than those produced by sub-ohm coils and they consume much lower amounts of e-liquid each hit.

Low-resistance coils

Coils with resistances below 1.0 ohms are considered low-resistance coils, and are aptly-named sub-ohm. These coils require kits that output a lot more power, as they use much more e-liquid and as a result, produce larger clouds of vapour.

When will I need to change my coils?

Unfortunately, coils will need replacing on a fairly consistent basis. However, how often you will need to replace your coils will depend on many things. How often you use your vape kit, the power output that is used to heat them and the type of e-liquid they are vaporising all have a direct effect on the lifespan of your coils.

High-resistance coils usually last between 1-4 weeks, whereas low-resistance coils will need replacing more frequently, sometimes as often as 1-2 weeks.

You will know when the time has come to change your coils when the vapour that your device is producing is tasting bitter or burnt. Vapers call this a dry hit, and we must say, it isn’t the most pleasant taste! This is why it is beneficial to stay on top of your coil life to ensure that they are always delivering a taste that is full of flavour.
